For those that already are aware, Yahoo has decided to make Shohei Ohtani available both as a hitter and a pitcher. This presents a unique situation for our league as Ohtani is widely expected to be an early pick in tomorrow's prospect draft. We are entering uncharted territory with Ohtani being listed as two separate players so I thought I should lay out how this situation, and potentially others in the future, will be handled in the context of our league.
Whoever drafts Ohtani will have rights to both his hitter and pitcher player on yahoo.
Both the hitter and pitcher must be called up at the same time and all future transactions involving Ohtani must include both hitter and pitcher. This means buyouts, trades, resigns, etc.
Until Ohtani is called up, he will only occupy one spot in the prospect list.
Once called up, considering whoever gets Ohtani will have access to two players, the cost for rostering him will be $3 rather than the typical $2.
A second entry will be made on the sheet for Ohtani
The $3 will be broken down as follows: $2 for pitcher Ohtani and $1 for hitter Ohtani. This is for the purposes of our sheet to list them separately since he will occupy two roster spots and thus must have 2 salaries
If Ohtani is not called up prior to losing his rookie eligibility, he becomes a forced callup once he has passed the thresholds as either a hitter or pitcher.
These guidelines are subject to change based on how Yahoo proceeds in the future with Ohtani. If Ohtani ceases to be offered as a separate hitter on Yahoo, whomever owns Ohtani will be allowed to remove that contract from their books at no cost, though will still be required to pay his pitcher contract.
These are the current guidelines. I have discussed this with the board. There is no clear best solution to handling this unique situation and Im open to possibly changing these guidelines if there is something I am missing/ overlooking or if there is a better way to proceed. These are the rules heading into the draft and any changes to these will be finalized before the season starts.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to discuss this situation further.
