Tomorrow at 12:00PM EST is officially the day everyone has been waiting for. 2017 Contract Baseball FA begins. The following is a reminder of some of the rules along with new ones put in place this offseason.
4.2.4 Each team must carry a minimum of twenty-two (22) players on their active roster. (This rules only takes effect once the regular season begins but managers with fewer than 22 roster players should keep this in mind going into FA so you know how many players you should be targeting at a minimum)
5.1.1.1 A free agent can only be signed by winning an auction for the player. After the auction ends you will have 24 hours to assign a contract to that player of either 1,2,3 or 4 years. If you fail to post a contract on the forum before the 24 hour period ends then a one year contract will be assigned to that player.
7.2.3 Free agents are defined as players who do not have a current contract with any team. A player is considered eligible to be signed if they have more than 130 at-bats (AB) or 50 innings pitched (IP) in the major leagues. A player under these limits can only be signed if they were drafted, called up, and bought out prior to reaching the limits.
7.2.4.1.2 During the offseason, when a manager holds the highest bid for 24 hours, the auction is over. (I want to emphatically stress that managers are entitled to make bids at any point before the 24 hours expires. If a manager chooses to bid at 23:55, that is his prerogative and is completely within the rules. There will be no backlash towards said manager. Some people may bid late for strategic reasons, others because it is the only time they can place a bid, others because they just want to mess with a manager. All three are perfectly acceptable reasons and are permitted. Please make sure to always maintain a friendly and respectful atmosphere within the league).
7.2.4.2 The minimum bid is $1 with bids increasing in increments of $0.25
7.2.4.3.1 Managers are unable to sign players prior to the 24 hours expiring. Repeated attempts to do so will result in the following penalties. ยท
1st offense: warning ,
2nd offense: auction is extended for 48 hours from when post of the illegal signing is made
3rd offense: manager forfeits right to win auction on player
4th offense: Manager is replaced from the league
(This rule was put in place because we have had several issues in the past where managers assign contracts before the auction is up. This has led to managers being mislead into thinking the auction is over when in fact is not, and potentially discouraging them from placing a bid. Please make sure to respect the clock. The easiest way to avoid this error is to make sure the post says "24 Hours Ago" or to look at the timestamp of the post).
7.2.4.4 A bid is official as soon as it is posted. Any deletion or modification of bids is grounds for suspension of bidding rights or expulsion from the league.
7.2.4.5 If an ineligible bid is made, the previous bidder will have the option of keeping their bid or re-starting the auction.
If anyone has any questions about these or other rules, feel free to ask me or look in the rulebook. These are just some of the rules I have chosen to report here but as always, the rulebook is the complete source for any and all rules.
Good luck everyone and may FA be as wild and entertaining as years past.
