Like at least a few others (that I know of), I think we need some reform when it comes to a minor league threshold. As it stands now, if a player plays 1 game they are forced up the next year. However, I think that really hurt teams that would like to keep some of their long-term project type of players. I think I may have an idea that would benefit everyone.
In other contract leagues, we have a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to young players so that they aren't forced up immediately/before they are ready. What I propose is that minutes played should be the barometer that we use for our minor league threshold. Usually, a player that is getting minutes and part of his teams rotation gets about 16 minutes per game. Over the course of 82 games a player that averages 16 minutes per game would receive precisely 1,312 minutes over the course of the season if they played in all 82 games. For the sake of keeping my proposal to a round number, let's call it 1,300.
Therefore, what I propose is a change to minutes played as our threshold, and the number of minutes I propose is 1,300 minutes. I think this is a fair total that would force all current useful players up at the beginning of the following season. It would also help long-term projects to be stashed and not immediately come up. This would help teams retain their young talent, and not have to flat out cut them or stash them on their NBA roster while they get little to no playing time.
The three caveats to this rule would be:
1. Playoff minutes don't count. Just like we don't count playoff AB's in contract baseball, playoff minutes won't count in this league.
2. No limit on how long a player can remain on your minor league roster, as long as they haven't surpassed the 1,300 minute threshold.
3. Players under the 1,300 minute threshold in their NBA careers that are draft eligible in our league wouldn't be able to be signed as free agents, just like players below the limit in baseball & hockey aren't eligible free agents.
