Something has been bothering me for the duration of the contract leagues. And that is the Consolation Bracket. There seems to be no point in it the way it is right now. It actually hurts teams to perform well in it, as it moves you further down in the draft.
I thought a very simple way of fixing this is to make the Consolation Bracket be for the number 5 overall pick in the draft. Teams finishing 13 through 16 hold the top 4 draft picks (16 picks 1st, 15 2nd, 14 3rd and 13 4th). So, why don't we award the winner of the Consolation Bracket with the 5th overall pick in the first round? This way, winning the Consolation Bracket actually has a reward attached to it, instead of a penalty. Instead of being considered the 7th best team and picking 10th overall, the winner would pick 5th overall. It gives teams an incentive to try and win the bracket as opposed to try and lose in it.
What does everyone else think? I would appreciate any feedback, and hopefully, we can get this rule changed this off-season if everyone is in agreement.

I think that idea sounds awesome Lions, makes all of us accountable to play/set lineups until the end and be rewarded.

I like the idea but then the teams that don't get to the Consolation final would still tank. Maybe each playoff should mean something (winner gets the higher slot). The following could be applied to the final standings
1st pick: 16th place 2nd: 15th 3rd: 14th 4th: 13th 5th: 7th place (Consolation winner!) 6th: 8th place (consolation final runner-up) 7th: 9th place 8th: 10th place 9th: 11th place 10th: 12th place ------------------ Playoff teams: 11th: 6th place 12th: 5th place 13th: 4th place 14th: 3rd place 15th: 2nd place 16th: 1st place
Note playoff teams get extra draft pick as a reward. I don't think there would be as much incentive to tank into the 5/6 matchup as you'd be losing out on extra draft picks you could get for finishing 1/2/3/4

I like the idea of each of the Consolation games meaning something. That would probably ensure everyone tries to win each match-up they participate in. However, I don't think the final four teams need more incentive to try to win. They are fighting for the bragging rights of being the top 3 teams (which is quite the feat in these leagues). I think the 5th place game could be for a higher seed, but the final four should be ranked exactly the way the always have (4th place gets 13th pick, 3rd place gets 14th pick, 2nd place gets 15th pick and champion gets 16th pick), because, like Crunch said, they are guaranteed the extra pick already.

I think draft order should be base off the standing after week 13.
This a contract league we shouldn't have to worry about someone tanking. If it where to happen that team should be replaced .

I agree with the proposal that is spelled out in BSB's post above and like Lions i have been thinking about this for some time. Although there is really not much you can do about tanking with the bottom 4 teams(yes it does happen and yes in rare instances you can catch it),you can control that next level and make it count by basicly reversing the finishing order for the draft. If you tank in the consolation game you would lose about 5 draft positions. To address Hitmen i realize that you put a great deal of emphasis on the regular season but i don't think setting the draft at week 13 is really fair either. If the 6th place team wins the championship then he should not be picking 11th he should be picking last. Question is should we do the consolation bracket in standard also? I say yes.

DE draft order was for nonplayoff teams basically I'm saying we should do it like the NFL. In NFL 1-20 base off reg season standing and playoff teams where they end up. So for us at current it be 1-10 of reg standing and playoff teams where they finish up

I disagree Hitmen. 1 through 4 should be the bottom four teams, based on the regular season. The rest need to be re-ordered based on the results of both the championship and the consolation bracket. Otherwise, the consolation bracket penalizes teams for winning. If we don't want to do that, then I think we should get rid of the consolation bracket altogether, and then have 1 - 10 be based on regular season standings and the final 6 be based on the championship bracket.
The whole point of this thread was to come up with a solution to the point of the consolation bracket. It is penalizing a team for succeeding because their draft pick becomes worse the better they do. It promotes tanking.
