I am at work on a major project to see how well we draft, including: Do our early picks really turn out better than the later rounds, and if so, by how much? How long does it take for a prospect we draft to reach MLB - and does it correlate to round picked?
I have started off with a simple look at the top 5 picks in each year since 2016 (as far back as our archives go), and here is what I found so far.
2016 - 3 Batters were taken and they have all reached MLB, averaging 1800 AB. 2 SP were taken and they also both are in MLB, and both right around 800 IP. Between the 5, they have been top 25 in the MVP voting on 4 occasions, won a Cy Young and finished runner-up, made 2 All Star rosters, won 2 Gold Gloves, and finished 3rd in the Rookie of the year. I would say that is pretty good picking.
2017 - 4 Batters were taken with 2 getting about 900 AB, one got 2 AB and the other 0. The Pitcher has not made it to MLB either. They have no awards. Ouch! A very weak effort that year.
2018 - 2 Batters were taken with 1 getting 1986 AB and the other 40. 4 SP were taken, all have pitched in MLB, averaging 150 IP. Yes that adds to 6 players, but 1 is Ohtani. He is also responsible for all of the awards. 1st and 2nd in MVP, 4th in Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, 2 All-Star games, and a Silver Slugger Award. Without Ohtani it is not very impressive, but since they all have made the show, not too bad.
2019 - 3 Batters were taken, 2 have played in MLB, but neither over 300 AB. 2 SP taken, both in MLB and averaging 150 IP again. No awards. What is it with the odd numbered years, another weak effort, though there is still time for younger draftees to make an impact.
2020 - All 5 players drafted were Batters, 4 have made it to MLB, and they have averaged 750 AB. Very impressive since it has only been 2 years since that draft. They also have been 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in Rookie of the Year voting.
2021 - 4 Batters and 1 SP drafted. 2 of the Batters have made it to MLB already (one made it before being drafted - Arozarena). He won 1 Rookie of the Year and the 2020 ALCS MVP.
The 2022 and 2023 drafts are too recent to bother with at this time.
