Hey everyone.
I have been working on an idea, and I would like to get some feedback from all the other contract league GM’s.
My idea is to implement a Franchise Tag. Each GM would have the option to use a Franchise Tag on one (1) impending free agent. A GM does NOT have to use the Franchise Tag every year, but they can if they want.
The Franchise Tag would automatically resign a player on an expiring contract for one (1) additional year at a 10% increase in their previous salary. Basically, it would be like extending their contract for one additional year.
There would be two restrictions that would come along with the Franchise Tag. They would be these:
1) A GM can NOT Franchise the same player in consecutive years. Once a player has been Franchised, the only way to bring him back the following year would be to do a normal resign
2) A player who is Franchised can NOT be bought out at any point during the year, or after the year. Also, the Franchised player can NOT be put on waivers. The Franchised player can, however, still be traded to another team. If the Franchised player is traded to another team, he automatically loses his Franchise tag, and is no longer subject to the restrictions that come with it. This means that the player can be Franchised by the new GM at the end of the year.
Well, guys, what do you think? I think this gives a nice option to bring back a player with a high salary that would normally be lost to free agency. It comes with enough restrictions, though, that it isn’t an automatic thing. You really need to be sure it is something you want to do.
Let me know what you all think. Leave a reply to this post and tell me if you like it or not, and why. If enough people do like it, I can talk to Mark and Oak about how we can implement this and when we could conceivably start using it.
Thanks a lot guys.
